Useful English Word or Phrase to Boost Your English: Mardy

What does it mean?

Mardy is a word particularly common in the North of England and the Midlands (famously used by Arctic Monkeys!). It describes someone who is moody, sulky, or acting like a "spoilt brat." If someone is "being mardy," they’re complaining and being difficult for no good reason. It’s a classic regional term that adds real character to your vocabulary.

Is it positive or negative?

Negative, but playful. It is not usually serious.

When do you use it?

Use it when someone is being childish or a bit sensitive.

Examples

Example 1: Do not be mardy, it is only a joke.

Example 2: He got mardy because we ate without him.
